We just finished off our Cornerstone Unit on “Sound and Music”, so what better way to finish it off than with an assignment where students were expected to make their own homemade instruments!  They were also required to write a 1 page piece describing the history of their instrument, how they made it, how it sounds, and how you play it, all using vocabulary from the unit.
Then, we had a gallery walk, which is basically an art exhibit with wine (apple juice) and cheese, where students could ask each other questions about their instruments, write comments, and try playing them.  Here are the results!
